Sex and Spirituality
“Desire is destiny yet unmanifest”
Linda Kim Davies
An article by Lawrence
The body was intended to experience joy, love, ecstasy, freedom, bliss, and sing the joys of creation… The body was intended to carry the light of your divine soul.
Moving the body in yoga class is akin to making love. There is commitment, sensuality, passion, sweat, exertion, exhaustion, and finally, dead pose. Post-coital bliss. Awareness of the relationship between sexuality, sexual energy, yoga and spirituality is crucial to awakening your consciousness, and lifting you to the highest levels of truth.
Sex energy is one of the most potent, plentiful forces on planet earth. Without it, life as we know it would cease to exist. It is also one of the least understood. Sexual energy is a force so powerful, most of us are afraid to experience it directly, fully, fearlessly, open heartedly.
For a moment, imagine sex energy as a great white shark. It’s a big, fierce force, with a huge mouth overflowingly filled with razor sharp teeth--and a very small brain. Why do great white sharks have such small brains? Because with a mouth that dangerous, you don’t need brain power. It is a perfect killing machine.
Sex energy is similar. Only the tiniest amount of the brain’s reasoning power is devoted to the genitals. It is significantly less than the power devoted to the hands, eyes, lips, tongue, or feet. In terms of sensation and feelings, however, significantly huge amounts of brain power are devoted experiencing to a very small surface area of the genitals. This is a volatile combination. Small to non-existent reasoning power, mixed with full, rich, multi-dimensional pleasurable, drive to experience sensations.
How do we, as conscious beings, come to understand the impact of this formidable force of sexual energy in our lives? One way to become familiar the ebb and flow of sex energy is through yoga practice. Yogis have long understood the power of harnessing sex energy for the evolution of higher consciousness and refinement of the body. What do you think down-dog and up-dog is all about anyway? But in our high speed, digital age, we have lost sight of transformation potential of this energy for our higher good. Through opening the channels to sex energy, we can experience the divine. Bliss, emptiness, openness, vulnerability; these are all aspects of the Infinite. We can know God through discovering, uncovering and exposing our raw, unexperienced, unexpressed sexual energy.
As we move our bodies together in yoga, in a symphony of sensations, emotions, sounds, and self love, we discover the truth of who and what we are as energy in motion. A constant flow of truth and being that expresses moment to moment. Ever present, ever changing.
Refining the body through the movement of sexual energy is key to psychological, spiritual and mental health. Yoga encourages and helps us to create sexual polarity, one of the keys to healthy, abundant, sexual attraction. Polarity occurs when, through our yoga, we move towards our feminine (lunar) or towards our masculine (solar) orientation. Ideally, throughout our practice, we are moving in and out of the masculine feminine polarity. In moments we are pushing, thrusting, and piercing, in others we are yielding, softening, and receiving, all the while intimately listening to the body’s ever changing voice.
In your yoga practice, begin to notice the shifts of polarity when they occur. Follow your body’s impulses. Be gentle. Be piercing. Be forceful. Be soft. Most importantly, listen. In the beginning of your practice, intend to allow your unconscious sexuality to begin to emerge and flow consciously into your practice. The sensuousness of yoga is key. Bring it into your conscious mind. Feel the emotion of your sexual power and life force moving through you. Taste your sweat. Breath deeply from your belly. Open your hips. Deeply relax your sex center. You are moving into an other-worldly ritual of breath, humidity and life. A tussle with your mind on your yoga mat.
Feel the life force of your sexual energy move from the deep, unconscious, shark infested waters, up and into your conscious awareness. Shift your attention fluidly during your practice. Feel your practice from different areas of your body. From your feet, your genitals, your heart, your throat, your third eye, your crown.
At the end of practice, bring the energy you have cultivated up into your brain. When sitting in meditation, or lying in dead pose, focus on the pleasure centers in your brain. Feed the brain your freed up energy. Feed the brain your oxygen and blood. Feed the brain your sexual energy, pleasure, exhaustion, and joy, and circulate it freely. Open and relax your heart completely. Allow the unbridled flow of sexual energy to deepen your connection to the Divine. Steep in the bliss of yoga. Feel the interconnectedness of all life. |
