Desire
Desire is the secret language God. It is that simple. Desire is something that human beings experience many times, every day. All human desire is the impulse to merge with the infinite unfolding of creation. Love, song, music, yoga, dance, prayer, sexuality, partnership, creativity is all part of the desire to merge with God in the divine flow of infinite creation.
This concept goes against what religion and spirituality traditionally teaches us. In most schools of thought, desire is something that needs to be controlled, pushed down, overcome. Desire is the bastard stepchild of enlightenment. The only path to awakening is the overcoming of desire. This begs the question; who or what part of us must overcome desire? Why is desire bad? Mainly because the perception of our teachers was that the source of desire was the ego, not God.
The desire to merge with the infinite is as old as stardust. Through out history, spiritual pioneers have sought to reconnect to the source from which they came. However, when the insecure, finite ego got involved with the divine impulse of desire, pain and suffering began to emerge within the human form. The “I” desires something that it can not have for one reason or another, and that causes pain, jealousy, guilt, shame, blame, etc.
The ego, feeling lonely, separate from the infinite, seeks to fulfill itself through external experiences designed to release the pressure of pain, and move us towards fulfillment and pleasure at some time in the future. Time and energy are spent chasing “shiny objects” that appear to exist outside of self. However, nothing is ever high enough, fast enough, big enough, beautiful enough, or bright enough. There is always lack. And every time an impulse comes, we feel that we must strive to externalize that impulse to feel whole and complete. So we put our lives on hold for some future time, where life will somehow miraculously be complete, and we can finally relax. Ahh, yes. I’ll relax when I get the car, the relationship, the marriage, have a baby, make a million dollars. Then my life will be fine. Then I’ll be happy.
Your brain is crazy. It projects out into the future, based on pain and suffering from the past to make decisions about NOW. But how can we truly know anything about now through the finite nature of the mind-brain? The brain is limited. It always will be. It is gelatinous goo, animated by the grace of awareness, that gets a majority of its data through interacting with the five senses.
But the impulse of Desire circumvents the five senses. It lives outside of the brain-mind-body. It flows from something infinite, and therefore is not meant to be “controlled”. Desire is the threshold to the doorway of the impulse to merge with God. All the ego wants is to love and be loved in a way that no external being can ever do. Only our relationship with the infinite can truly nurture us in the way that our insecure ego needs. This is attained by opening to the impulse of desire, and allowing the infinite, from which the impulse emerges to take over the ego, to embrace our endless needs, in love, compassion, understanding, in the infinite, inclusive nature of these words. This can only be attained through surrender. The secret to quieting the mind is not efforting, but rather understanding that it’s simply the nature of the mind to be in continuous action, and that that action is NOT who you are. It never will be. The secret to quieting the mind is to realize that the mind exists within you, within your awareness.
Desire is a path, a spiritual path, where you follow its divine impulse, and allow that impulse to wash over you like a sacred Hawaiian waterfall. Desire is rich, life affirming, liberating if simply allowed to flow back to the essence of God, from which it emerges. Make peace with your desire body, and discover peace in your mind. You are not your mind, and you are not your body. You are simply awareness. And desire, if followed diligently, will lead you back to infinite awareness from where you emerge. If we are truly to know God from deep within, we must come to explore impulses and desire. It is the secret language of God. |
